Basically, he is a cool dude incase you don't know him) had an awesome time in Texas and I am going to post some of his pictures cuz they are awesome, and another Jay fan clearly should have some presence on the site (especially since we are the 2 biggest Gibbons fans. We have talked about it. If you combine our Jay fan-ness and then add up every other Jay fan's fanness, they will never even come close to ours. yeah, makes no sense, but think about it and it will). I am in the middle of making a giant Jay album on Photobucket and they will have their own section on there. "Good pitching beats good hitting. "I'm just getting lucky, hits are starting to fall."

Gibbons' other hit didn't just "fall." In the sixth, he uncorked an inside fastball from Vicente Padilla 340 feet onto the right-field flag court for his seventh homer of the season.

Gibbons had only 10 homers in 97 games in 2004.

"I think he's healthy," manager Lee Mazzilli said. "I think it makes the game a lot easier to play when you feel good about yourself."

Gibbons hit 15 home runs in 73 games during his rookie season in 2001. He followed that up with 28 the following year, and had his best stint in 2003, hitting a career-high .277 with 23 long balls and 100 RBIs.

Despite entering this year healthy, Gibbons hit just .232 in April. But in his past 21 games, the 28-year-old is hitting .329 with nine doubles and five home runs.

"I'm swinging the same as I did in Spring Training," Gibbons said. "I figure if I keep putting the ball in play good things will happen."

Good things have happened with Gibbons driving in runs from the bottom third of the lineup. His three runs Saturday helped the O's improve to 27-15, seven more wins than the team had at this point a season ago.

David Selig is a contributor to MLB.com. I gave Jay a 1977 penny that i found heads up on the flag court, but it didn't really work...well, I hope it helps tomorrow! haha. After tha game I saw his parents cuz they were with him. Gibbons signed a few guys broom. he was the only person who did. When Mrs. Gibbons (if that is who it was) saw my sign, she was like aww! and she took a picture of me and my sign. so Jay was like I can only sign a few today, but he ended up signing for literally everyone. He looks nothing like his parents both of which seem to be very very nice. His dad (stepdad maybe?) is pretty tall. Tall and skinny. There were two other people with him but they left alone. Could have been his sister or something. I don't know. anyways. Yesterday was amazing. I'll post only one picture though.

His parents are divorced so I am not sure who exactly was who. But I am assuming they are somehow or another his parents. Wednesday, however, was not one of those days.

Gibbons, making his first appearance in the Baltimore Orioles' starting lineup in 11 days since contracting pneumonia, went 1 for 3, singling to left field, popping out to first base and striking out swinging, as the Orioles defeated the Boston Red Sox, 6-1, in a rain-shortened, six-inning exhibition game.

By most standards, it was an easy afternoon of action, a relaxing, even lazy, day at the ballpark.
For Gibbons, the team's projected starter at first base, it was a full-bore workout.
Gibbons was so sick last week he didn't emerge from his Fort Lauderdale condominium for five days. He slept in his bedroom at night and, for a diversion, hauled his tired limbs to the living room couch during the day. Last Friday, while his teammates played an afternoon game against the Minnesota Twins in Fort Lauderdale, Gibbons ventured outside for the first time, walking across the street to a strip mall.

He tried to get a haircut, but the salon was full. Instead, he entered a nearby café and ordered a crepe. He took a few bites and realized he needed to lie down.

He went back to his apartment, his journey aborted after about 30 minutes.
"I got back, crawled back on the couch, and fell asleep," he said.

Saturday represented major progress: While most of his teammates traveled here for another game against Boston, Gibbons took batting practice for the first time. His elation at getting back on the field, however, was far surpassed by yet another urge to sleep, which he did, deeply, as soon as he returned to his condo.

His roommate, Brian Roberts, all but barricaded himself from Gibbons, holing himself up in his room and pressing towels against the bottom of the door to ward off the possibility of the exchange of germs. But if Gibbons felt like a pariah in his apartment, he must have felt like a forgotten man on the field. When he went to the plate for the first time Wednesday, the giant scoreboard in center field at City of Palms Park referred to him as "Javier Gibbons."

At the time he fell ill, Gibbons was having a superb spring, hitting .421 in seven games. (His average is down to .391 after his performance Wednesday, along with an 0 for 1 stint pinch-hitting in Tuesday's 12-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.) He is penciled in as the first base starter a year after an injury-filled season in right field, the position Sammy Sosa has assumed. Rafael Palmeiro is expected to be the everyday DH.

"I was frustrated," said Gibbons, who has had back, wrist and hip problems and vision corrected by laser surgery since he was acquired as a Rule 5 pick by the Orioles in 2000. "It's uncontrollable. There's nothing I could have done."

The Orioles sent to Gibbons to a local physician in Fort Lauderdale after he showed up with a temperature of 102 and complained of fatigue almost two weeks ago. Perplexed that Gibbons displayed no other signs of illness -- no congestion, no cough -- the physician, David Onstad, took a chest X-ray.

Upon diagnosing the condition, he gave Gibbons antibiotics and a shot, Gibbons recalled.
"I thought I'd be ready to go in a day, no problem," he said. "But then I couldn't get out of bed for about three days."

Gibbons hoped to be inserted in the lineup this past weekend, but Orioles Manager Lee Mazzilli did not want to overwork him with Opening Day approaching (April 4). Mazzilli said Gibbons looked great Wednesday and would likely start at first in Thursday's game in Fort Lauderdale against the Red Sox.

Gibbons said he was winded after batting practice but found a surge of energy at the start of the game. He said he was pleased to reach base with a single and hoped he would score (he was forced out at second).

That's not to say, however, that he wasn't exhausted by game's end. He might have been the only player looking forward to the 2 1/2-hour ride back to Fort Lauderdale.
"I feel a little tired," he said. "Going on the bus, I'll probably sleep."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A61396-2005Mar23.html

Quick update

Gibby was kickin ass in Spring Training but he caught pneumonia. sucks huh? well I really hope he gets better. poor guy. pneumonia sucks!

Spring Training

Spring training has started. Wow. That was a bit of a shocker. Anyways, they are trading Hairston and two prospects.

Here are some Gibbons quotes I just found and thought were pretty damn funny or just freakin awesome.

"I definitely would have liked to play with Mickey Mantle. He was a lefty, like me. And he fought injuries and all kinds of other stuff and made it out there every day. He could run the bases, hit for power, just a good all-around player. And the movie 61* was a great movie. I have watched a lot of tape of Mantle, and he was an awesome player.”

"It's goofy looking, I'm goofy looking. I think mine is the best; you've got your bloated Sidney Ponson and Jerry with that brown stuff on his pants." --on his bobblehead (Jay, you are NOT funny looking! you are friggin hot! and the bestest baseball player, don't deny it! haha. you are too dang modest!=D)

"I can't remember hitting a grand slam in my life before. I got the ball. It cost me a couple of bats, but it makes a good Father's Day present.." - Gibbons - Orioles Hangout - 6/13/03

"It was kind of hard to enjoy it when I hit it because I wasn't sure it went out. I started running again [after the reversal] and I thought, 'Wait a minute, did I even touch first?' I couldn't remember, so I went back and did it again. I'm glad it's in the books now. ... He can have the ball. Hopefully there's a lot more to come." - Gibbons on his first homer - Baltimore Sun - 5/5/01

The fan who grabbed Jay Gibbon's first homerun ball on <st1:street st="on"><st1:address st="on">Eutaw street</st1:address></st1:street> gave it to Gibbons during last Saturday's game. It had been widely reported that the fan wanted a lot in return, but he told Gibbons that it was just a misunderstanding and handed it to him asking for nothing in return. Gibbons will mail it to his father. "He came over to the dugout and said, 'Hey, Jay, here's your ball.' I asked him if he wanted anything for it, like a bat or something. He said, 'No. I'm sorry, it was a whole misunderstanding and I'm terribly sorry. Here's your ball and enjoy it.' And that was it. He was very nice about it. I'm happy to have it." - Gibbons on getting his homerun ball back - Baltimore Sun - 5/26/01

"It was absolutely an amazing night. Almost all are Gibbons, but there are some of Matos, Bigbie, and like 9 of Roberts. (I didn't stay long, but I did what I needed)

http://photobucket.com/albums/v235/GibbonsGirl2531/

Oh I won tickets by looking at the schedule and with the help of some other people :-) Thanks fellow O's fans! And I got to ask Gibbons a question. It was hilarious because when I got in at 9, I went straight to him at booth 1, got his autograph and he signed with my silver sharpie thingy. Then I was the first to ask a question. I was so nervous and I sounded ridiculous (amy and all the people there can vouch for this) I said "Okay first, I just wanted to say that Jay Gibbons is my favorite," and the dude on the stage was like "oh but you just said it! So why is he your favorite?" and I said "Uh..(very nervous and can't think) because he is just the best!" and they laughed. I couldnt think. Are you kidding me??? And then Jay was like "No!wait a minute! I remember her! I stole her pen eaqrlier in the day. here, this is your right?! [pulling pen out of back pocket] Here I'll give it to you in a..." announcer cuts off and takes the pen and tells me to come up and get it. So I do. And Jay goes "I swear I didn't pay her for that either!" and then I asked what thoughts were going throught their heads during their first ML at bat.

Jay was pretty funny during the whole thing. He was really nice. And Bigbie signed a kid's bat. And Gibbons said he will be wearing the socks next year. Amy asked him "We just wanna know if Jay will be rocking the socks this year?" and he was like "Uh, I think the socks will be back up this year" the dude asks, now why is that? and he says "they didn't work down or up last year, so I might as well try up again."

The guy doing the commentary for this one was beter than like Jim HUnter, etc.

Oh and when asked about the annoying Boston and NY fans who come down to Camden and are well annoying, Gibbons said "They suck!! I hate when they come"

Gibbons joked that he "prefers playing in right with Luis, because I just tell him,' I'm just gonna stand on the line in right and you take everything'. Hanging over his head, however, was the possibility that the Orioles would sign premium free agents and have no room left for Gibbons on their roster. Perhaps the one person who benefited from the Orioles' difficulty in signing players such as Richie Sexson was Gibbons, who was signed to a one-year, $2.6 million deal late Monday and will remain an Oriole. The club had until midnight to tender Gibbons a contract for 2005. Gibbons spent most of the 2004 season nursing back and hip injuries and was one of the team's biggest disappointments, hitting .246 with 10 homers and 46 RBIs.
"The only time I started to think about [being non-tendered] was the last couple of weeks," he said from Tempe, Ariz. "I had a feeling it would come down to the last minute. I wanted to come back in great shape and get healthy to help someone and it's going to be the Orioles."

Meanwhile, the Orioles were expected to tender all of their arbitration-eligible players -- Jerry Hairston, Luis Matos, Jorge Julio, B.J. Ryan, Bruce Chen, Rodrigo Lopez and John Parrish -- contracts for next season.

"I think everybody is safe," an Orioles source said. The biggest question mark for a contract was Gibbons, who might have been expendable had the Orioles signed a power hitter through free agency. Sexson signed with the Seattle Mariners, Magglio Ordonez likely won't sign until mid-January while Carlos Delgado is being coveted by the Mets as well as Baltimore. "There are still players out there that we like," executive vice president Jim Beattie said. "We will use our resources." What likely encouraged the Orioles to bring Gibbons back was his clean bill of health. Head trainer Richie Bancells watched Gibbons work out last week in Arizona and the two flew back to Baltimore for an MRI on Gibbons' back. The MRI exam showed revealed no damage and he has been cleared to work out without limitations.
Orioles manager Lee Mazzilli said last week that a healthy Gibbons in his 2005 lineup would be comparable to acquiring a free agent.

"I think I am in the best shape of my life," Gibbons said. "I feel awesome. I feel pretty excited to get another chance. I think [Mazzilli] was expecting the guy from 2003 and, unfortunately, things didn't work out. It's good to hear that he still has confidence in me."

Meanwhile, Gibbons reported that his vision is near perfect after lasik surgery in October. Doctors said Gibbons has 20-10 vision and he admitted his poor vision was especially hurtful in night games.
"I really noticed during [a rehabilitation assignment] in the minor leagues, when the lighting isn't as good," he said. "I don't think I would have hit .100 in the minors last year."
The suspense is over and Gibbons is glad to be back in Baltimore.
"I love Baltimore," he said. "I'm happy. I will call last year a wash. Hopefully I'll have that breakout year that everybody talked about."

I think I am just as happy as he is!!!

SCRATCH THAT!!!

Well, I was very depressed a few minutes ago, but now you can scratch that entire thing baby!! Jay had to get contacts but is doing better without them. He went 3-4 friday and 1-4 saturday. Today he is playing First Base. Awesome. Here is the story.

Gibbons sees few hits with contacts
He removes them, doubles in his first at-bat; Lopez sits again with sore back
By Joe Christensen
Sun Staff
Originally published August 26, 2004
OAKLAND, Calif. - Orioles right fielder Jay Gibbons used to have perfect vision. Better than 20/20, in fact. Every time he had his eyes checked, it was 20/15.
But when the Orioles sent him on his recent minor league rehabilitation assignment, he noticed a definite difference. He had a much harder time seeing the ball under the dimmer lights in Bowie and Frederick ballparks.

He had his eyes checked, and sure enough, it was 20/25.
So the Orioles fitted him for contact lenses last week, and starting Aug. 17, he began wearing them for games. He said he could definitely see better, but he was having a hard time adjusting to the dryness in his eyes.
He went hitless in 13 straight at-bats to end the homestand, and then came to Oakland, where the winds at Network Associates Coliseum started giving him fits. He was using eye drops almost every inning, until Tuesday night, when he decided it had to stop.
"After my second at-bat, I yanked them out," Gibbons said.
He struck out twice against Mark Mulder with the contacts in, and then doubled in his first at-bat after taking them out. He struck out again against Arthur Rhodes in the eighth inning, but he decided to leave the contacts out for the rest of the series in Oakland. Without them, he was 1-for-3 last night. He will probably try the contacts again tomorrow in Texas.
"I was seeing pretty good at home, but I was 0-for-18 with the contacts," he said before last night's game. "I took them out and went 1-for-2."
This eyesight dilemma is the latest twist on a trying season for Gibbons, who is batting .208 with six home runs and 30 RBIs. He has been on the disabled list twice - once for a herniated disc in his back, and once for a torn hip flexor muscle.
After returning from the DL the second time, he has just five hits in 38 at-bats, and it still looks like he's having a hard time finishing off his swing from the back and hip injuries.
Gibbons said his double off Mulder "was the first ball I've really turned on in a while and felt like I had anything on it. The outs I'm making now are soft outs."
But Gibbons said he still hopes to get his swing right and finish the season strong. A year ago, he hit .277 with 23 home runs and 100 RBIs.
"I'm just hoping he can have one [breakout] game and get himself out of it," Orioles manager Lee Mazzilli said. "You go with him because he's been through that before."

I met Jay!

I met Jay Gibbons! Here is the entire run down on our meeting.

OKay so I brought my poster, and I went over to RF during O's BP. What do you know Gibbons was there in RF. Sooo I put up my sign. He saw my sign really quickly then did a double take and smiled really big and he waved. Then I waved and he yelled "I like your poster" Then he started talking to BJ Ryan and some other O's about my poster. as you can see he is pointing to me and sorta like smiling and laughing in some of the pics. Then Jay went to take batting practice. There was this like 40 year old man talking to me out in RF about the O's and when Jay got back he really helped me out. He was like "Jay this pretty girl wants to meet you" and Jays looks over and smiles. He goes "she has got beuatiful brown eyes" he asked me my name and then told Jay "her name is michelle" So then like thirty seconds later, Jay catches a ball and comes over and what do you know says "Michelle, are you ready?" (to catch a ball he had in his hand) and I smile and manage to say yes. And he tosses it to me and says " I like your sign." I almost died but managed to say thank you sooo much and I love you Jay! or You rock Jay! something like that. Then he had to go because it was the Blue Jays turn for batting practice.
It was the best day of my life. It was so awesome. Oh and during the course of the game Gibbons waved to me four times. Cuz during pitching changes and before at bats I'd put up my sign and he'd wave cuz he knew it was me. It was so awesome.

Gibby doing pretty well

So last night Gibbons went 1 for 3 with a walk. \I think he is gettin the hang of things again.

Mazilli said that he will play Gibbons in the outfield but not at the SkyDome because of the Astro turf. They won 7-6 in 16 innings. Great story about that in the Washington post. Rodrigo Lopez volunteered to go work in the OF if anyone got hurt. And Cabrera pitched relief and got his first save. Very interesting I must say!

Yesterday they lost 7-6 the opp. of the 16 innning game. I saw Gibbons. I was like yay! Gibbons! Cuz I recognized him by his hair. He is the only Oriole with red hair haha.

Jay Out 4-6 Weeks

"I knew something was wrong," Gibbons said. Yesterday he went 1 for 3 with a strikeout and an RBI. Yay Jay! But what I did notice was that when he struck out he seemed to be in pain. Also I think he is beginning to get his swing back because he isn't just popping up and grounding out. I also think he is putting too much stress on himself to do well, and right now he sorta has to relax.

I am pretty sure that Jay decided to do his "no-shaving-til-I-get-out-of-the-slump" bit again. His plate discipline has improved, and he doesn't chase high fastballs as often as he did in the past. Gibbons' compact swing allows him to inside-out pitches and drive them to the left-center gap. This approach helps him hold his own against southpaws. He does a good job of studying pitchers and is very effective the third and fourth time around the batting order.

Baserunning & Defense
Gibbons began his career as an above-average first baseman. Over the last two seasons, he's spent most of his time in right field. He works hard on his defense and has made good progress. He aggressively charges balls hit in front of him, making spectacular catches at times. He's improved his range to nearly average, so he's no longer a liability in right. His throws are accurate, and he'll throw out runners who test his arm. He struggles at times getting to balls hit into the right-center gap because he lacks foot speed. He remains a station-to-station runner who can clog up the bases. Gibbons can go from first to third only when the ball is driven into the gap and to the wall. He rarely attempts to steal a base.

Jay Facts

I decided I should post facts about Jay and his scouting report.

Age: 27
Height: 6-0
Weight: 193 lbs.
Bats: Left
Throws: Left
Pos: RF
Born: March 2, 1977, Rochester, MI, United States
Full Name: Jay Jonathon Gibbons
HS: Mayfair HS
College: Cal State Los Angeles
Experience: 4 years
2004 Salary: $3,000,000
Lives in: Long Beach, CA
ML Debut: 4.6.2001

Single...Is a 1995 graduate of Mayfair HS in Lakewood, CA, where he played baseball, football and soccer...Attended Cal State-Los Angeles, where he was a 3-time All-Conference and All-Region baseball player...Was signed by Toronto scout Bill Moore after being the Blue Jays' 14th round pick in the 1998 First Year Player Draft...Returned to Baltimore the last two winters to take part in the annual Orioles FanFest.

My First Post

First, please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Michelle, and I am a Die Hard Jay Gibbons fan.

Jay Gibbons is the Baltimore Orioles amazngly talented right fielder. Sadly, he has been injured recently and is in a bit of a slump, but I am not losing faith,. He will get his swing back. It is just a matter of time, that's all. I live in Maryland and I might be going to the orioles game vs. Tampa Bay on July 6th with my dad. I am hoping to get Jay's autograph.

The thing about this which would rule is that it would be exactly one year after I got Mike Bordick's autograph. So all in all it would be the best day ever. woohoo.

My hope is that Jay will someday stumble upon this site, but I doubt that will happen since it is just a blog.
